8 Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
(Psalm 34:8, NIV)
The authorship of Psalm 34 is attributed to David. He is speaking from his experiences where he had found protection from the Lord. David is singing about God’s goodness to him and is asking others to experience the goodness of God for themselves.
David’s invitation is that by putting trust in God one would so thoroughly see or perceive the blessings of trusting God. The life of David was filled with many trials and tribulations. Yet throughout his life, David was a man after God’s own heart. David was committed to God’s ways and demonstrated fidelity to God’s Law.
13 “You (Saul) have done a foolish thing,” Samuel said. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. 14 But now your (Saul’s) kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him (David) ruler of his people, because you have nor kept the Lord’s command. (1 Samuel 13:13-14, NIV)
22After removing Saul, he made Daivd their king. God testified concerning him; “I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” (Acts 13:22, NIV)
David is inviting all who have sought in vain for happiness and contentment to leave the world behind. Renounce all else and put their total trust in God alone. To not just listen to what others say or what they have read. Taste and see for yourself that the Lord is good! David is sure and confident because of his personal experiences with God.
God created us with the ability to interact with his creation. One of the ways we respond to stimuli is through the sense of taste. Taste is the ability to detect the flavor of food minerals and various chemicals. Human taste is classified into five qualities: sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami (savory).

Taste is one of the traditional five senses of the human body; it works in conjunction with the senses of smell, sight and touch.

Are you smelling the bacon?!

Are you tasting the chocolate cake?!
Humans receive tastes through sensory organs called taste buds, located on the roof of the mouth and in the throat and concentrated on the top of the tongue. Certain areas of the tongue are more sensitive to certain tastes, like bitter at the back of the tongue, sour along either side toward the back, sweet on the front surface, or salty around the front edge. Food molecules dissolved in saliva bind to receptors on the surface of taste cells located in the taste buds. Nerve impulses generated by three cranial nerves relay the taste message to the medulla oblongata. Taste impulses continue traveling to the thalamus which directs the taste impulses to the gustatory cortex of the brain where taste is perceived.

Like David, have you tasted and seen that the Lord is good? A time when beyond a shadow of a doubt, the Lord was holding you in His loving hands, blessing and sheltering you. Share your story and ask people to not just go on your word, but to try trusting in God for themselves!
15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, (1Peter 3:15, NIV)
9 The Lord is not slow about his promise as some count slowness, but is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.(2 Peter 3:9, RSV)
